the “Do IT your Self Era” is over

Spend a few minutes searching through forums, Reddit or Facebook groups and you’ll find the same advice repeated over and over again.

“Just use threaded rod.”

Some riders modify existing axles. Others visit a local machine shop. Some simply buy a long piece of threaded bar from the hardware store and cut it to length.

Do these solutions sometimes work? Yes. Did anyone actually engineer them for aggressive street riding? Not really.

Manufacturers produce generic threaded rod for construction and industrial fastening. They do not design it for precision bicycle hubs, proper bearing surfaces, or repeated impacts from grinds and peg tricks. Riders relied on it because no manufacturer had developed a purpose-built alternative.

Why A Peg Axle Is Different

A standard thru axle and a peg axle may look similar, but they perform very different jobs.

Instead of simply clamping the wheel, the axle now has to resist significant bending forces generated by the rider’s body weight acting through the peg during grinds, stalls, hops and hard landings.

It’s a completely different engineering challenge.

This is one of the reasons BMX has relied on 4130 chromoly steel for decades. Properly heat-treated chromoly combines high strength, toughness and excellent fatigue resistance, making it one of the most trusted materials for highly stressed BMX components.

So We Decided To Build One

When we started looking for a proper peg axle for modern dirt jump bikes, we assumed somebody already made one.

Surprisingly, nobody did.

As far as we know, Freaky Nuts is the first company in the world to develop a complete range of precision CNC-machined 4130 chromoly peg axles specifically for modern dirt jump bikes.

That wasn’t our goal in the beginning.

Our goal was simply to build the product we wished existed ourselves.

We machine every axle from premium heat-treated 4130 chromoly steel instead of adapting existing parts. Precision bearing surfaces, accurate tolerances, and heavy-duty male bolts ensure an OEM-style fit. The result is a purpose-built component that installs like an OEM part and withstands aggressive street and dirt jump riding.

Every rider who has ever tried to build a proper street MTB knows the feeling.

You spend thousands building the perfect bike.

It starts with the right frame, continues with the right fork, and ends with the right wheels.

Then, when it’s finally time to mount pegs, manufacturers still expect riders to use generic threaded rod from the local hardware store. That never made sense to us.

Modern dirt jump bikes deserve components engineered specifically for today’s aggressive street and dirt jump riding.

As new bikes enter the market, we continue developing new axle solutions because the demand clearly exists.

The dirt jump and street MTB scene keeps progressing, and we believe the hardware should progress with it.

For too long riders have accepted improvised solutions because there simply wasn’t an alternative.
