Sitting directly beneath the Zugspitze and just across the German border in Austria, Bikepark Ehrwald is not trying to be the biggest, flashiest or most polished bike park in the Alps. And that is exactly why we loved it.
This is not a place built around glamour, massive crowds or perfectly polished bike-park highways. You will not find endless, wide motorway-style trails like you might know from some of the larger parks in France. It is also completely different from smooth, pedally flow lines such as the Flow Link in Leogang.
Bikepark Ehrwald sits directly beneath the Zugspitze, just across the German border in Austria.
The trails are narrow, rocky, technical and occasionally almost sketchy. In other words: proper mountain biking, exactly the way mountain biking should feel.
Real Trails on a Real Mountain
The character of the terrain is immediately noticeable. These are trails that force you to look ahead, choose your line and actively work with the bike.
The tracks are technical, but that does not mean they are slow. Once you understand the terrain and find the right rhythm, you can carry a surprising amount of speed.
Even riders on full downhill rigs will find enough room to let the bike run. Many of the corners are long enough to carry real momentum, push through the suspension and properly pull the bike through the turn.
It is not machine-built perfection. The mountain has its own character, and you have to respect it. That is what makes Ehrwald so much fun.
Hot Weather and Loose Conditions
The days we rode were exceptionally hot. Because of the dry weather, the tracks had become dusty and there was a fair amount of loose gravel in certain sections.
Especially on the inside of the corners, there was plenty of loose material waiting to catch out anyone who turned in too early.
But honestly, that is not where you are supposed to be anyway.
These conditions made correct line choice even more important. Brake too late, enter too tight or stay on the brakes through the corner, and the mountain will immediately let you know about it.
When the trails are this dry, you have to stay relaxed, look through the turn and trust the bike underneath you. Ehrwald rewards riders who keep their eyes up and carry their speed through the correct part of the corner.
The Blue Trail Is Not Really Blue
The blue trail is officially the most accessible option in the park. It is certainly rideable for a broad range of mountain bikers, but we would personally describe it as being closer to a red trail.
Less experienced riders should not expect a perfectly smooth beginner motorway. There are technical sections, natural features and places where confidence and bike control are required.
That does not mean newer riders should avoid it. It simply means they should take their time, inspect unfamiliar sections and not assume that every blue trail in the Alps is rated in exactly the same way.
The red trail is also classified relatively lightly.
In many other bike parks, sections of the red trail in Ehrwald could easily receive a black rating. It is faster, more technical and more demanding than its colour might initially suggest. Again, that is not a criticism.
It is simply part of Ehrwald’s identity. The trails are natural, honest and sometimes more serious than the sign at the start may lead you to believe.
And then there is the black trail.
The Black Trail Is Something Special
The black trail was the absolute highlight for us.
When we rode it, the track still had a proper natural forest floor. It felt raw and alive. Grip changed constantly, roots and rocks shaped the line, and every section demanded your attention.
The beginning is steep and technical, immediately separating it from the easier trails in the park.
After the opening section, you arrive at a beautifully constructed wooden bridge featuring a gap and a drop. That section appears to stop many riders from continuing onto the rest of the black trail.
For those who are comfortable riding it, that creates one major advantage: you can often have the remainder of the trail almost entirely to yourself.
From there, you enter what can only be described as a Teletubbies-style landscape for mountain bikers. Green hills, open terrain and beautiful mountain scenery but filled with natural jumps, drops and raw freeride lines.
It feels playful and serious at the same time.
There is something about the trail that reminds us of old-school freeriding and motocross riding through the forests during the 1980s. It is wild, free and refreshingly uncomplicated.
The trail has been shaped intelligently, but it has not been overbuilt. The constructed elements complement the natural terrain instead of replacing it.
You are not simply following a perfectly defined groove from top to bottom. You are reading the ground, spotting transitions and deciding how much speed you want to carry into every feature.
That is real mountain biking.
Natural Jumps, Drops and Freeride Feeling
The black trail delivers one feature after another without ever feeling like a theme park.
There are natural jumps that allow you to be creative with your line. There are drops that work with the landscape rather than looking as though they have been placed there artificially. There are fast sections where the track opens up just enough to let the bike move underneath you.
It is the kind of trail that makes you want to turn around, get back on the lift and immediately ride it again.
By the time you reach the final section, you are already smiling.
Then the trail finishes with one last incredible drop, giving the black line the ending it deserves.
The only small disappointment is that after completing the black trail, you eventually have to continue on either the blue or red track to reach the bottom.
But after a run like that, it is difficult to complain.
Low-Key Atmosphere, Fast Lift and No Stress
Bikepark Ehrwald is not only enjoyable because of the trails. The entire experience around the riding is uncomplicated.
The prices are reasonable, parking is easy and there were no queues at all during our visit. The lift is quick, allowing you to complete a serious number of runs without spending half of the day waiting.
This is another major difference compared with some of the larger and more commercial bike-park destinations.
There is no constant stress. No huge crowds pushing into the lift queue. No feeling that you need to rush just to get enough riding done.
You park, prepare your bike, take the lift and ride.
Simple.

Evening Sessions With the Locals
One of the best parts of our visit was the opportunity to join an evening ride.
On selected occasions, the park organises evening sessions where riders can continue until around 9:00 p.m. During the summer, this means riding late into the evening while the sun is still lighting up the mountain.
The local scene showed up in force.
These were not quiet laps with only a few riders. The locals were there, they knew the lines and they were riding hard. The energy on the mountain was incredible.
Riding with local mountain bikers always gives you a different perspective on a trail. They know where the grip is, where you can release the brakes and which small natural features can be turned into jumps.
More importantly, they made us feel welcome.
A bike park can have great trails, modern lifts and expensive facilities, but it is the people who create the real atmosphere.
In Ehrwald, that atmosphere was exactly right.

Bikepark Ehrwald is not a park for people who only want perfectly smooth flow trails and wide berms from top to bottom.
It is for mountain bikers who appreciate natural terrain.
It is for riders who enjoy rocks, roots, loose corners, narrow lines and technical challenges. It is for people who understand that a trail does not need to be perfectly polished to be fast.
It is for riders who want to experience the mountain rather than simply ride over a surface built on top of it.
No glamour. No unnecessary show. No polished bike-park motorway.
Just fast lifts, good people, proper bikes and raw mountain-bike trails beneath the Zugspitze.
That is Bikepark Ehrwald.
